Skin Trends for 2024: Your Best Skin Year Yet

Every year, the world of skincare continues to evolve, with new trends and innovations helping to improve our relationship with our skin and get to the root of some of our skin concerns. 2024 looks to be no different and we’re hoping it can be your best skin year yet! In this blog we’ll explore the rising trends in skincare as well as provide an optimised but general routine to try for your best ever skin in 2024.

2024 skincare

The skincare game has changed, for all the right reasons.

How we’re prioritising our skin in 2024

We’re focused on personalisation

Personalisation is a major trend in 2024. Customised skincare routines that cater to individual needs, preferences, and concerns are becoming the norm. While you can order products online that rely on AI to provide you skincare recommendations, sometimes it’s better talking face-to-face with a professional that can assess your skin in real life. At Beauty Within Salon we offer free skincare consultations to help find the best products and ingredients for your skin and current concerns.

We want sustainable skincare

Sustainability is no longer a niche concept in skincare; it's a necessity. In 2024, the trend is towards eco-friendly products and practices. This includes everything from biodegradable packaging to sustainably sourced ingredients. One of our main skincare brands, Medik8, constantly strive to go above and beyond with their commitment to waste reduction, aiming to be Net Zero by 2040. Not only this, they aim to achieve 100% reusable, refillable, or recyclable packaging by 2026 and have started rolling out refills for selected products, such as Press & Clear.

We’re all staying hydrated

Gone are the days when hydration was merely an afterthought in skincare routines; today, it stands at the forefront of skincare essentials. This heightened awareness stems from a deeper understanding of the skin's structure and its needs. Hydration is now recognized not only for its role in keeping the skin supple and plump but also for its ability to enhance the skin's barrier function, reducing vulnerability to environmental stressors and irritants. The market has responded with an abundance of products specifically designed to hydrate and retain moisture in the skin, ranging from advanced hyaluronic acid serums to innovative moisturisers that lock in water content.

Further, the focus has shifted beyond topical treatments to include lifestyle habits that promote hydration, such as drinking adequate water and maintaining a balanced diet rich in hydrating fruits and vegetables.

We’re being more gentle

In 2024, there's a growing recognition that less can be more when it comes to skincare. The trend is shifting towards gentler formulas and fewer steps in skincare routines. This minimalist approach not only simplifies your routine but also reduces the risk of skin irritation and over-treatment. Further, gentle cleansers and exfoliants are becoming more popular, as they effectively cleanse and exfoliate the skin without stripping away natural oils.

We’re looking after our skin barrier

There's a heightened focus on protecting and strengthening the skin barrier, crucial for overall skin health. This approach recognises the barrier as more than just a surface layer; it's essential for defending against environmental damage, retaining moisture, and preserving skin integrity.

Many of us are increasingly using products with ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol - vital for the skin barrier's structure - while avoiding harsh ingredients that can disrupt its balance. Gentle cleansing, proper hydration, and anti-inflammatory ingredients are becoming staples in skincare routines, emphasising the importance of the skin's natural defences.

We’re committed to SPF

Thankfully, not a trend, but a staple! In recent years we’ve become far more aware of the impact of sun damage day-to-day and face SPF has risen in popularity with many incorporating it into their daily routines.

Medik8 SPF products

Medik8 have a fantastic range of super silky, lightweight SPF products, perfect for a variety of skin types.

Modern SPF formulations have evolved to cater to various skin types and lifestyles, offering broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays, and even safeguarding against blue light from digital devices. The integration of SPF into daily moisturisers, makeup products, and even lip care items underscores its indispensability in daily skincare routines. As awareness grows, SPF is no longer seen as just an occasional addition for sunny days but as an essential, year-round shield for the skin.

Skincare habits we’re ditching in 2024

We’re saying goodbye to harsh physical exfoliants

We’re steering clear of rough, abrasive scrubs that have been a staple for physical exfoliation. These products, often containing large, gritty particles, can cause microscopic tears in the skin, leading to irritation and potential damage to the skin’s protective barrier - as well as wreaking havoc on the environment! The shift is towards more skin-friendly alternatives, such as gentle chemical exfoliants (like AHAs and BHAs) and enzymatic peels that dissolve dead skin cells without physical abrasion, providing a safer and more effective means of exfoliation.

We’re moving away from alcohol-based products

High concentrations of drying alcohols (such as denatured alcohol or isopropyl alcohol) in skincare products are being increasingly avoided. These types of alcohol can strip the skin of its essential oils and disrupt the natural lipid barrier, leading to dryness, irritation, and long-term skin damage. As a result, there's a greater demand for alcohol-free formulas that hydrate and nourish the skin without compromising its natural balance.

We’re no longer overusing multiple active ingredients

The trend of using multiple potent active ingredients simultaneously is finally diminishing. Layering several actives like retinoids, acids (such as glycolic or salicylic acid), and vitamin C can overwhelm the skin, causing redness, peeling, and increased sensitivity. The focus is now on a more thoughtful, targeted approach, using specific actives that address individual skin concerns and allowing the skin to adapt without overstimulation. Thank goodness!
